NAIL RIDGES
Nail ridging is a concern of many people. Any ridges present are prone to splitting and
chipping.
I recommend that the client moisturize her nails with daily use of cuticle and nail oil and
hand creams and use protective gloves while working with water or harsh chemicals.
Ridges can run either lengthwise or across the nail. Some lengthwise ridges are normal in
adult nails, and they increase with age. Lengthwise ridges can also be caused by conditions
such as psoriasis, poor circulation and frostbite or any other trauma caused to the nail!.
Ridges that run across the nail can be caused by conditions such as high fever, pregnancy,
measles in childhood, and a zinc deficiency in the body. Horizontol ridges is usually a sign of
an internal illness at the present or in the past, like mentionned above high fever, etc...!
Since these nails are very fragile great care must be exercised when manicuring!
Buffing the nails can make it look better only temporarily, because you smooth the ridges.
However, thinning the nail plate too much can cause cracks at the free edge and cause
more problems and more ridges to form.. Be gentle and buff very lightly if you choose to do
so!
Try ridge fillers and base coats to help disguise those ridges on your nails and apply nail and
cuticle oil as often as possible 2-3 times daily!.
CUTICLES
Healthy cuticles are also an important part of nail care. There are many different types of
cuticle care products available to keep cuticles moisturized in order to stay flexible and
attractive and not split, crack, and break.
Cuticle cutting is not a good idea! The cuticle protects the nail's matrix, and that's the nail's
growth center. Cutting the cuticle can remove the nail's protective barrier against bacteria.
This can cause the nails to grow in weird and can lend itself to cracking, splitting, peeling
nails and nail ridges in the long run or worse, get infected.
Also, cutting the cuticle may encourage it to grow MORE AND even thicker. Gently
Pushing your cuticles back regularly and using cuticle oil daily will keep your cuticles under
control and looking healthy and is the safe, effective and utltimately permanent way to care
for cuticles. While this solution is not "instant", it will be the best long term solution!
Giving yourself a manicure or having it done for you every two weeks will keep your nails
looking their best!
